Navi Mumbai police's anti-narcotics squad carried out a major crackdown on an illegal drug trade running in the Kamothe area, seizing 6.5 grams of heroin valued at around Rs 1.3 lakh. Five people, including a supplier, sellers and middlemen, were arrested in the operation, which was led by Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Nigde and has created panic among drug peddlers in the area.

Police received a tip-off on September 15 that drugs were being bought and sold in the Kamothe area. The information reached Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Nigde, who immediately ordered the squad to act. Police then laid a trap in the Shivkalptaru Arcade area.

During the operation, police detained Mahesh Shivlakhan Singh (34, Kamothe), who was seen moving suspiciously in the area, and searched him. The search recovered 6.5 grams of heroin from him. Police seized the heroin and arrested Mahesh Singh.

Questioning of Mahesh Singh gave police information about the drug supply chain. The squad then carried out further action in Navi Mumbai as well as in Mumbai, detaining Harpreet Singh alias Harry, Jagdev Singh alias Jaggi (38) and Jagpreet Singh alias Nijjar (26). Harpreet Singh was arrested from Kharghar, Jagdev Singh from Borivali, and Jagpreet Singh from the Sion Koliwada area.

The investigation also revealed that this consignment of drugs was to be sent onward for sale in the Kalamboli area. Police then also arrested Elvin Antony (34) of the Karee area.

A case has been registered at Kamothe police station. All five accused were produced before a court, which remanded them to two days of judicial custody. Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Patil is investigating further leads in the racket, including where the drugs were being supplied from and who else is part of the chain.

Navi Mumbai police have stepped up their campaign against the illegal drug trade. The anti-narcotics squad, led by Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Nigde, has exposed a supply chain stretching from Kamothe to Mumbai through this tip-off-based operation.
