Narak Chaturdashi falls on Saturday, November 8, when the practice of lighting a Yamdeep outside the home is observed, according to religious belief.
The Chaturdashi of the month of Kartik holds special significance in Hinduism. The night is also known as Narak Chaturdashi and Chhoti Diwali. It is a custom to light a Yamdeep on this day. Religious beliefs are cited to explain why the tradition began and what it signifies.
According to the Panchang, Narak Chaturdashi is observed on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of Kartik. This year, the Chaturdashi tithi begins at 10:49 am on November 7 and ends at 11:29 am on November 8. Narak Chaturdashi will therefore be observed on Saturday, November 8. Amavasya begins as soon as Chaturdashi ends.
According to religious belief, Yamraj, the god of death, is worshipped on this day and lamps are offered to him. It is believed that lighting a Yamdeep outside the home removes the fear of untimely death and brings the family Yamraj's blessings. The lamp is to be lit following the prescribed rituals.
While lighting the lamp, prayers are offered to Yamraj for the happiness, prosperity and long life of the family. Prayers are also offered for release from the torments of hell and for moksha. The lamp is regarded as a symbol of removing negativity and evil from life.
Another belief is also told about the day. On Chhoti Diwali, Lord Krishna is said to have slain the cruel demon Narakasura and freed people from his terror. In memory of this victory, the festival is also celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi. Homes are given a special cleaning and decorated with flowers and colourful lamps. Lamps are lit in the evening, conveying the message of the victory of good over evil and of happiness, prosperity and positivity in life.
It is also said that some things should be avoided on this day. Yamraj, the god of the netherworld, is worshipped on this day, so no living creature should be killed. The direction of Yama is considered to be south, so the south side of the house should not be kept unclean. Donating oil is given special importance in the scriptures, but oil should not be donated on this day because, it is said, goddess Lakshmi is angered by it. Tamasic food should also be avoided on this day.
In brief, the Chaturdashi tithi this year begins at 10:49 am on November 7 and ends at 11:29 am on November 8. The Yamdeep, cleaning of the house, decorations and evening lamps are all described as part of the tradition of this day.
