Dhanteras falls on November 6, 2026, with the Trayodashi tithi running from 10:30 am that day to 10:47 am on November 7, according to the panchang.

Shopping picks up in the markets even before Diwali begins. Buying gold and silver on Dhanteras is considered especially significant during the festival. This year Dhanteras will be observed on November 6, 2026. It is believed that buying gold on this day brings happiness, prosperity and opulence to the home.

According to the Hindu panchang, the festival is observed on the Trayodashi tithi of the Krishna paksha of the month of Kartik. Goddess Lakshmi, Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari are worshipped on this day. Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the god of Ayurveda and the physician of the gods.

It is a religious belief that Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean (samudra manthan) on this day. The day is therefore also called Dhanvantari Trayodashi or Dhanvantari Jayanti. Buying gold, silver and new items on Dhanteras is considered auspicious. It is also believed that purchases made on this day yield thirteen times the benefit.

According to the panchang, the Trayodashi tithi will begin at 10:30 am on November 6 and end at 10:47 am on November 7. Pradosh Kaal will run from 5:33 pm to 8:09 pm. The puja muhurat for Dhanteras is from 6:02 pm to 7:57 pm.

According to religious belief, some items are advised against buying on this day.
