Nagpur: Police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in a case of a fatal-intent attack on a youth suspected of being a police informer. The action has been taken against notorious criminal Suraj Lanjewar and six others, making seven accused in all. The gang from the Nandanvan area is now booked under MCOCA.

The accused named under MCOCA are Suraj Vilas Lanjewar (31); Vandana Vilas Lanjewar (47) of Shastri Nagar, Nandanvan; Prashant Dinesh Akhare (26); Hardik Marotrao Palandurkar (24); Pradip Rambhau Akhare (45) of Garoba Maidan; Sagar Shankar Mohrle (36) of Shastri Nagar; and Kishor alias Golu Sunil Vishwakarma (28) of Gayatri Apartment, Ambedkar Chowk.

The case began with the arrest of Suraj's brother, whom police had arrested in a theft case. Suraj suspected that Akshay Bandu Vanjari (28), a resident of Bajrang Nagar, Juna Bagadganj, had tipped off the police about his brother. He also believed the brother was arrested because of the information Akshay gave.

Suraj and his associates were allegedly looking for Akshay to kill him. The incident took place on the night of August 25 at Kumbhar Toli in Shastri Nagar. Suraj, his mother and the other accused allegedly attacked Akshay. Chilli powder was first thrown in his eyes, and he was then stabbed with a sharp weapon and seriously injured, the allegation says.

Following the incident, a case of attempted murder was registered at Nandanvan police station. Police have now invoked MCOCA against all seven accused in the same case. Police have begun an investigation following the action. The charges against the accused are allegations, and further details will emerge as the investigation continues.
