The health department of Nagpur Zilla Parishad had taken up a new initiative last year to strengthen primary health centres, or PHCs, in villages. Under this, work began on a plan to build modular operation theatres (OTs) and smart PHCs. The effect of this is now visible.

Sixteen PHCs in the district have been equipped with the necessary facilities. At these centres, sterilisation operations for men and women under the family planning programme are being carried out successfully on a regular basis. Through the efforts of surgeon Dr Nandeshwar along with medical officers and staff, villages are now getting facilities similar to city hospitals.

Earlier, villagers had to travel to the district hospital or private hospitals for these operations. But after the modular OT and smart PHC initiative, this facility is now available regularly at the village level itself, free of cost.

Dr Rajkumar Gehlot, District Health Officer of Nagpur Zilla Parishad, said that under the supervision of CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, continuous efforts are being made to make health services better, higher quality and more accessible to people. According to Dr Gehlot, as a result of this effort, 77 health facilities in the district have received the National Quality Assurance Standard (NQAS) certificate.

The Zilla Parishad is continuously working to strengthen health infrastructure in villages, improve the quality of services and deliver medical facilities at the local level. The aim is to ensure health services reach the last person in society.

Going forward, the Zilla Parishad plans to make the remaining PHCs in the district modern and high-tech in the same way. Health officials say that with these facilities in place, villagers are saving both time and money and getting expert medical services close to home. The initiative is also expected to bring major improvement in maternal and child health and other emergency medical facilities in villages.
