Nagpur police have arrested a man accused of breaking into homes. The case is from the Gittikhadan police station area, where the accused is alleged to have entered Raja Sharif's house, injured his elderly mother and robbed the home. Police arrested him on Sunday night.
The accused has been identified as Clement alias Rohit Eugene Pillay (35), a resident of Kirad Layout in Mankapur. According to police, he was wearing a mask during the crime, which made identifying him a major challenge.
After the incident, police began searching for the accused. Information on suspicious activity in nearby areas was gathered, and recordings from CCTV cameras at the spot and on surrounding routes were examined. Because the face was covered, identification on the face alone was not possible.
The investigation team then combined traditional methods with technical analysis. Police went through footage from about 80 CCTV cameras at different locations. They examined the direction from which the suspect came, the route he took and where he went after the crime. Images and video captured by different cameras were compared in an attempt to identify him.
Police also used gait analysis. The technique examines a person's manner of walking and body movements. Video footage can be compared on the basis of factors such as walking speed, style and the movement of the feet. It can help an investigation when the face is not clearly visible on CCTV. However, a person cannot be held guilty on gait alone, and it must be corroborated by other technical and circumstantial evidence.
After continuous investigation, police reached Clement alias Rohit Eugene Pillay. The probe was then taken forward on the basis of his movements and other available evidence.
Another incident has surfaced during the investigation. It is said that the same accused had also tried to enter an elderly woman's house in the Gaddigodam area. He fled the spot for fear of being caught when the woman screamed. Police are now examining the link between the two incidents. They are also looking at the circumstances in which he targeted these homes and whether he has been involved in similar crimes before. Police may question the accused to gather information on his possible criminal record and involvement in other cases, but his role in other crimes will be determined only by investigation and evidence.
Crime Branch Unit-2 Inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh and her team had begun a parallel investigation in the case. The team took the probe forward by analysing technical evidence, CCTV footage and the suspect's movements. ACP Jadhav said Inspector Deshmukh and her team solved the case through skilled technical investigation and professional methods.
Assistant Police Inspector Chetan Borkhede, Police Sub-Inspector Manoj Raut, and head constables Naresh Tumdam, Vijay Yadav, Pravin Shelke, Arjun Yadav, Mahendra Sadmake, Kamlesh Ganer, Mangal Jadhav, Sandeep Pande, Ashish Dhandre, Sanjeev Dahifale and Kamlesh Gahlod played key roles in the operation, along with Inspector Deshmukh.
For now, the next stage of the police investigation after the arrest is to establish the link between the two incidents, look into possible other crimes and verify the available evidence.
