Winter has begun to make a gradual appearance in Nagpur. With the night temperature falling, people are feeling a mild chill early in the morning and late in the evening. Because skies have stayed clear, the gap between the heat of the day and the cool after sunset is widening.
Nagpur recorded a minimum temperature of 18.8 degrees Celsius on Friday, one of the lowest in Vidarbha. For the past three days, the city's maximum temperature has held at 33.8 degrees Celsius, about 1.1 degrees above normal.
The night temperature is said to have dropped by 2 degrees Celsius within 24 hours. People have got their first taste of winter in the second half of October itself.
The cooling trend is visible in the rest of Vidarbha too. On Friday, the minimum temperature was 17 degrees Celsius in Gondia and Yavatmal, while Washim recorded 19 degrees Celsius. Akola had the region's highest minimum, at 23.6 degrees Celsius.
The difference between the afternoon heat and the morning cool is felt especially by those who leave for work early, go for a morning walk or have other outdoor work.
According to the available forecast for Nagpur, the next few days are likely to have relatively warm afternoons and cool nights. Daytime temperatures may stay a little above 30 degrees, while the minimum may hold between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius. Mostly sunny or clear weather is expected at first, with some cloud possible later.
On Sunday, October 25, the maximum is expected to be around 32-33 and the minimum around 18-19 degrees Celsius, with mostly sunny skies. On Monday, October 26, the maximum may be 32-33 and the minimum around 18-20 degrees Celsius. The sky will be clear, and the day is likely to start cool.
On Tuesday, October 27, the maximum may be between 31 and 33 and the minimum between 17 and 22 degrees Celsius. The weather will be mostly sunny, though forecasts differ somewhat. On Wednesday, October 28, the maximum may be 31-32 and the minimum 17-22 degrees Celsius, with partly cloudy skies.
These figures are approximate ranges drawn from available forecasts. They are not firm figures, nor an official warning from the IMD. People should check the local weather bulletin for the latest information.
The current weather reflects a shift towards winter. When the sky is clear, temperatures fall more at night even if the afternoon is warm. In the coming days, mornings may be comfortable and afternoons somewhat warm. It would be advisable to wear light clothing when going out in the morning, especially for children and the elderly, who feel temperature changes more.
For now the chill is mild, not sharp. But if the minimum temperature keeps falling in this way, the feel of winter in Nagpur could deepen in the coming weeks.
