A court has convicted a man accused of assaulting a woman employee and attempting to rob an MSEB bill collection centre at Pagalkhana Chowk in the Mankapur police station area of Nagpur. Additional District and Sessions Judge S.H. Gwalani sentenced Ayaz Anis Ahmed Khan (25), a resident of Sindhi Colony, Mecosabagh, to 7 years in prison after the hearing concluded.

The incident is reported to have taken place on May 17, 2021. A case was registered against Ayaz at Mankapur police station on the complaint of the woman employee, Kajal, who worked at the same MSEB bill collection centre where the incident occurred.

According to police, Ayaz allegedly entered the office around 1:30 pm that day intending to rob it. He allegedly threatened Kajal and demanded the keys to the locker. When she refused to hand them over, the accused allegedly struck her on the head with a stone and then smashed her head against a wall. Fearing that people nearby would come running after hearing her screams, the accused fled the scene.

Following the incident, Mankapur police began an investigation. They examined CCTV camera footage from the office to try to identify the accused. After considerable effort, police traced and arrested Ayaz. The case was investigated by Amit Mishra, who was a sub-inspector at the time, and he filed a chargesheet in court after gathering the necessary evidence.

During the court hearing, Assistant Government Pleader Kamlakar presented the case for the prosecution. Based on the evidence and witnesses presented, the court found Ayaz Anis Ahmed Khan guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in prison. Head Constable Swati Borkar handled the case on behalf of the police.
