Nagpur crime branch's two-day drive opens 30 cases, seizes goods worth Rs 13.37 lakh
A two-day crackdown by Nagpur's crime branch covered burglary, vehicle theft, liquor, gambling, weapons and drugs, with over 25 arrests.
The crime branch in Nagpur has opened 30 cases after a wide-ranging crackdown carried out over two days. Under the leadership of DCP Deepak Agrawal, separate crime branch teams ran a drive between September 22 and 23 against house burglary, vehicle theft, illegal liquor, gambling, drugs, weapons and tobacco-related goods. During this period, police arrested more than 25 accused and seized goods worth a total of around Rs 13,37,880.
In burglary and vehicle theft cases, the crime branch cracked 5 cases and recovered 6 stolen vehicles. The property seized in these cases has been valued at around Rs 9,30,000. Police said the action has tightened the noose on those active in vehicle theft and burglary.
The crime branch also came down hard on the illegal liquor trade. Raids at 11 locations across different parts of the city led to the seizure of liquor worth Rs 27,570. Police registered cases against those involved in the illegal sale and storage of liquor. Those illegally providing space for drinking were also not spared -- 4 cases were registered under Section 68, and goods worth Rs 43,650 were seized in these actions.
Crime branch teams also reached gambling dens operating in the city. Two actions were carried out under the Gambling Act, in which Rs 3,36,160 was seized. Panic spread among those involved in gambling following the raids.
Police also kept watch on those carrying illegal weapons. In one case, a sword valued at around Rs 500 was recovered from the accused. Police registered a case against the accused under the relevant sections.
The crime branch's drive was not limited to conventional crimes alone. One action was carried out under the NDPS Act, while three actions were taken under the COPTA Act against the illegal sale of tobacco-related goods. Besides this, police also cracked down on hotel and lodge operators who used the OYO name and logo without permission, registering cases against three such operators.
In this way, the crime branch acted simultaneously on every front -- from vehicle theft and burglary to illegal liquor, gambling, weapons, drugs, tobacco-related goods and violations at hotels and lodges. A total of 30 cases came to light over two days, with more than 25 accused apprehended.
According to crime branch officers, such action against crime and illegal activities in the city will continue going forward. Police said their focus will remain particularly on those active in theft, vehicle theft, illegal weapons, drugs and illegal trades.
