Nagpur architect accuses husband's family of forcing her to change religion
A 26-year-old architect has accused her husband and four in-laws of pressuring her to change her religion after their wedding and assaulting her when she refused.
Police in Nagpur's Nandanvan area have registered a case against five people, including a woman's husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law, after she accused them of pressuring her to change her religion after marriage.
The complainant, a 26-year-old architect, married a 26-year-old engineer under the Special Marriage Act on January 16, 2026. She said she had made clear before the marriage that she would not change her religion or adopt any other faith.
In her complaint, the woman said that some time after the marriage, her in-laws allegedly began pressuring her to change her religion. She has accused her husband, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, the sister-in-law's mother-in-law and the sister-in-law's brother-in-law of pressuring her over religious conversion between January and September 2026.
The woman told police that when she refused to change her religion, she was allegedly abused and assaulted. She has alleged that she was punched and threatened with death. Her complaint also states that she was continuously subjected to mental and physical harassment.
The alleged harassment is said to have continued at their home in Nandanvan. Distressed by this, the woman eventually approached the Nandanvan police station and filed a complaint.
Based on her complaint, police have registered an FIR against all five accused under sections 85, 115(2), 296, 298, 302, 504 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with other related sections. The Nandanvan police are investigating the case. These are, so far, only allegations, which can be confirmed once the investigation is complete.
