After the state eased the cluster scheme's conditions, BJP leaders who had opposed it are welcoming the move, and a contest for credit has begun.
The BJP's stand on the cluster redevelopment scheme for Mira-Bhayandar is in the spotlight again. The scheme, considered important for redeveloping the city's old and dangerous buildings, has been caught in political controversy from the start. The state government has now eased its conditions. BJP leaders who had been opposing the scheme have begun welcoming the decision, and the change in the party's position is being discussed in political circles.
The cluster redevelopment scheme for Mira-Bhayandar was approved in 2022. It envisaged redeveloping the city's old buildings by grouping them into clusters. On this basis, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation had prepared 24 redevelopment plans for the city.
Complaints later emerged that some conditions of the scheme were creating difficulties in redeveloping standalone buildings. In particular, such buildings were also being forced to join clusters. It was said that these conditions, along with the other requirements for redevelopment, had angered residents.
BJP MLA Narendra Mehta objected to the scheme's strict conditions and had opposed it from the beginning. He alleged that the scheme was obstructing the redevelopment of standalone buildings. In 2025, he demanded that the cluster scheme be scrapped or made optional. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis did not accept the demand at that time. The stand of the local BJP leadership and the state government on the scheme had then become a talking point.
The state government has now decided to relax the scheme's strict conditions. It is hoped that this will make redevelopment easier and help resolve the problems of standalone buildings. After the government's decision, BJP leaders have welcomed it. A politics of credit now appears to be starting over the same decision.
After the easing of the conditions, BJP leaders in Mira-Bhayandar are seen posting on social media welcoming the decision. Saying the decision will bring relief to the city's residents, some leaders are also claiming credit for their own efforts. But the fact that the scheme was opposed earlier is being raised again. The question being asked is what the BJP's stand on the cluster scheme actually is.
Beyond the political allegations and tussle over credit, a larger question is how beneficial the scheme will really be for the citizens of Mira-Bhayandar. People in the city are watching whether, with the conditions eased, redevelopment of old buildings gains speed, whether stalled proposals move forward, and whether the way opens for residents to get safe homes.
While the decision to ease the conditions is being welcomed, the BJP's earlier opposition is being recalled. Thus the question of cluster redevelopment in Mira-Bhayandar is no longer limited to development but has also become an issue of claiming credit in local politics.
