The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has decided to cut water supply by 10 per cent in the industrial and residential areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad, following the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Rainfall has been lower this year and there is a threat of serious water scarcity ahead.

According to the India Meteorological Department's forecast, rainfall in the state is likely to stay low this year and next because of El Nino. Preventive steps are being taken now to deal with the possible shortage. MIDC has appealed to citizens and industrial operators to use water very sparingly.

Water stock in the dams is currently limited. So that supply can be maintained comfortably from it until August 31 next year, the state government's Water Resources Department has directed all municipal corporations and the authorities concerned in the state to cut water supply by 10 per cent. MIDC has begun preparations immediately after the order. It has been made clear that in the industrial area of Pimpri-Chinchwad the cut will remain in force until August 31, 2027.

MIDC draws water from the Pavana river, treats it and supplies it to the industrial areas and residential parts of Pimpri-Chinchwad. In the relevant industrial area of Pimpri-Chinchwad, MIDC supplies 100 MLD of water daily. In addition, 30 MLD is supplied daily to the municipal corporation. MIDC's supply area covers the industrial areas of Ravet, Nigdi, Bhosari, Akurdi, Pimpri and Chinchwad. Industries and residents in these areas may feel the impact of the cut.

With the cut in force, water will now be available for a shorter duration than the earlier regular timings in all these areas. Given the seriousness of the situation, MIDC has asked industries to reuse water in industrial processes, make maximum use of treated water and avoid wasting drinking water.

Meanwhile, the water stock in the Pavana dam is being reviewed continuously. To reduce the severity of the shortage ahead, MIDC is also planning to shut water supply completely for one day a week.

Citizens and industries are advised not to use drinking water for non-essential purposes. Industries should increase the reuse of treated water. Water arrangements should be made according to the supply timings. Necessary steps should be taken to stop leakage and wastage of water. Keep watch on the notices issued by the administration on the Pavana dam stock.
