MCOCA slapped on five accused in Nagpur's Sadar area
Nagpur police invoke MCOCA against five men from Sadar linked to an attempted murder case and past criminal records
Nagpur police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against five members of an alleged gang active in the Sadar area. The action followed a probe into the accused's criminal activities and past records.
Police identified the accused as Shakeel Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Sujal Joseph Paul, Sajid Shaikh Abdul Basit Shaikh, Saleem Abdul Gaffar Khan and Raja Abdul Gaffar Khan, all residents of Goa Colony, Sadar.
According to police, the action is linked to the alleged attempted murder of 24-year-old Lucky Naresh Dasar, a resident of Gaddigodam. Police said that on June 20, the accused allegedly attacked Dasar with sticks and a knife and also attempted to set him on fire.
A case was registered against the accused at Sadar police station under several sections, including attempted murder.
During the investigation, police examined the accused's past criminal records. Officers said they had previously been booked in several serious cases, including alleged attempted murder, assault, rioting and violations of the Arms Act.
Police said the investigation found that the accused allegedly operated in an organised manner and were repeatedly involved in crime, creating an atmosphere of fear among people in the area.
Based on the investigation, officers and the probe team at Sadar police station prepared a proposal for action under MCOCA. The proposal was sent to senior police officers through Zone 2 DCP Annapurna Singh.
After the proposal received the necessary approval, MCOCA provisions were invoked against all five accused.
Further investigation in the case has been handed to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sadar division.
Police said the action is part of efforts to crack down on organised criminal gangs in the city and to stop repeat offenders from spreading fear among people.
