Marathi film 'Jayanti 2' crosses Rs 2 crore as theatres expand in week two
The film on campus discrimination has widened from about 150 to over 250 theatres in its second week.
The Marathi film 'Jayanti', released a few years ago, had drawn a good response from audiences. Its sequel, 'Jayanti 2', is now before viewers. The film, which takes up the serious issue of discrimination in colleges, is also getting a good response at the box office. Released on September 11, the number of shows in theatres rose sharply in its second week, and the film has so far earned Rs 2 crore.
In its first week, the film was running in shows across around 150 theatres statewide. But given the response the film was getting and the buzz around it, the number of shows was increased substantially in the second week. According to the makers, more than 500 shows are currently running in over 250 theatres, and the film has also crossed the Rs 2 crore mark at the box office.
The story follows a girl named Payal from an area like Chandrapur who comes to the city for her studies. Payal's dream is to pursue higher education and then take up farming. But after taking admission in college, she faces ragging. The story moves forward through the fight Payal wages against this ordeal. What happens to Payal in this struggle going forward, and whether she gets justice, is shown in the film.
However, the story is not confined only to Payal's struggle. The film also speaks to several issues such as the college administration's outlook, the treatment meted out by teachers and students, and the government's role. 'Jayanti 2' raises the question of how discrimination continues to arise in places of education even today.
'Jayanti', released in 2021, had also drawn audience attention. Carrying that story forward, 'Jayanti 2' takes up themes such as discrimination in the education sector and the politics behind it. The makers say that the serious issue linked to events happening around us, along with a thought-provoking story, is what audiences are liking, which is why the number of shows was increased in the second week compared to the first.

He is joined by Payal Jadhav, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Rohini Hattangadi, Devika Daftardar, Vijay Nikam, Rajkumar Jarange and Mansi Subhash in important roles.
