Sanjay Kantu Yadav, 38, held by Navi Mumbai International Airport police, was declared dead at a hospital in Nerul after falling ill in a lockup.

A 38-year-old man in police custody in Navi Mumbai died during treatment. The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Kantu Yadav. Senior police officers have been informed, and further legal procedure is under way.

Yadav had been arrested in a case by the Navi Mumbai International Airport police. After the arrest, a court remanded him to police custody. He lived at Ananta Tower in Sector 6, Ulwe, and was originally from Varanasi district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Yadav was kept in the lockup of the NRI Coastal Police Station in Navi Mumbai on October 8. Lockup staff saw him repeatedly clenching his fists, with his hands and feet stiffening. When his condition worsened, the police rushed him to Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul. However, doctors declared him dead while treatment was on.

The police said Yadav had undergone a medical examination at the Panvel Rural Hospital before his arrest. He had not reported any health complaint when produced in court either. The police also said he had not complained of any illness or health problem during the medical examination on October 6.

Following the incident, a panchnama will be drawn up with video recording in the presence of the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Belapur, panch witnesses and the family of the deceased. The body has been sent to J.J. Hospital in Mumbai for post-mortem. The exact cause of death is likely to become clear once the post-mortem report is received.

This is the second recent death in the custody of the police or a security agency in Maharashtra. Earlier, on September 22, a 35-year-old man died in the custody of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. The Criminal Investigation Department of the Maharashtra Police was investigating that case.

The man who died was Imran Shaikh. He had come to Mumbai from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh in search of work. According to Central Railway officials, on September 20 he went to the main RPF post at CSMT and asked about trains to Khandwa. He appeared frightened at the time and said that some people were trying to kill him. He then turned aggressive and attacked RPF Sub-Inspector Aniket, the officials said. He had also injured himself.
