Reports of paper leaks and scams in the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) have troubled students preparing for competitive exams in recent days. Fewer vacancies and the scams forced students to take to the streets, and opposition leaders too raised the issue forcefully. After the cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made several important statements on questions related to MPSC that could bring relief to students.

CM Fadnavis said that MPSC currently releases comparatively fewer vacancies, and the number of posts in Group C also remains low. Presentations from five departments have been made this year, and a regular review is being done of how many posts there are, how many are vacant and how much demand has come in. Keeping all this in mind, the next recruitment drive will see a record number of posts, meaning a major MPSC recruitment that will break the record of all previous drives will be carried out. The Chief Minister also clarified that a separate arrangement is being set up to fill posts in local self-government bodies, and that the committee formed on MPSC matters is doing good work.

Meanwhile, the demand for an objective-pattern exam is also gaining ground again. The Dalvi Committee had earlier recommended the objective pattern, on the basis of which a decision was taken at that time. This demand has now been raised again. The Chief Minister assured that if the committee demands adoption of the objective pattern, the government will take a positive view on it.

On the demand for the resignation of the MPSC chairperson, CM Fadnavis said that the scam currently being discussed relates to a matter from before the chairperson took charge of the post. The MPSC chairperson is appointed by the Governor, and it is not right to demand a resignation without a proper assessment of their work. The Chief Minister made clear that the government's only aim is the interest of students.
