Lakhs of young men and women preparing for government jobs in Maharashtra have received welcome news. The number of posts in the upcoming exams of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission, or MPSC, will be increased on a large scale. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The government is also seriously considering the demands of students who have for several days been seeking a change in the examination pattern.

Speaking to the media after a state cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made clear that the government will leave no stone unturned in providing employment to youth. He said that in this cabinet meeting, five different departments gave detailed presentations on vacant posts in their offices. In the upcoming recruitment, the number of important posts will be significantly increased, particularly in the Group C category such as clerk-typists, tax assistants and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors (AMVI).

CM Fadnavis said with full confidence that the upcoming recruitment process will bring in such a large number of posts that all previous records in MPSC's history will be broken. He also said that a separate and robust arrangement is being considered to fill vacant posts in local self-government bodies.

Meanwhile, candidates preparing for exams such as Rajyaseva, Agriculture, Engineering and FSO have been continuously demanding that the descriptive pattern be scrapped and the earlier objective, or MCQ, pattern be reinstated. Responding to this, the Chief Minister said that a high-level committee headed by senior officer V. Radha has been formed to improve the commission's functioning and the examination pattern.

Earlier, the descriptive pattern was implemented based on the recommendations of the Dalvi Committee. However, Chief Minister Fadnavis said that if the V. Radha Committee recommends reinstating the objective, or MCQ, pattern, the government is willing to accept it wholeheartedly.

The V. Radha Committee has so far received more than 20,000 emails and suggestions. The students' main demand is that there be full transparency in the checking of answer sheets, and that a fixed calendar for exams and results be released in advance each year. The committee's mandate is not limited to the exam pattern alone -- it is also framing concrete rules on the secure distribution of question papers, the standard operating procedure (SOP) for exams, the method of awarding marks, and protecting the interests of selected candidates in case an exam is suddenly cancelled.
