Lovlina Borgohain beat China's Bao Jiayi 5-0 in the women's 75 kg final to win India's 12th gold at the 2026 Asian Games.
India's star boxer Lovlina Borgohain gave the country a gold medal on her birthday. In the women's 75 kg final at the 2026 Asian Games, she beat China's Bao Jiayi 5-0 by unanimous decision to win the gold.
Bao Jiayi is the winner of the 2026 Asian Boxing Elite Championships. Even so, Lovlina showed patience and precise timing from the start and gave her opponent no chance to make a comeback.
In the first round of the final, Bao began aggressively and unleashed a flurry of punches. Lovlina did not lose her composure, answering each of Bao's attacks with strong counter-attacks. Her good use of distance and timing in the ring earned her the first round 3-2 from the judges, giving her an early lead.
In the second round the Chinese boxer looked even more aggressive, but Lovlina's confidence was clear. Landing accurate and effective punches, she won the second round 4-1. After two of the three rounds, she led 2-0.
In the third and final round too, Lovlina kept complete control. Her strategy of letting Bao come forward and then counter-attacking worked fully. She won a historic gold with a unanimous 5-0 verdict.
The win is a special one for the Indian contingent. It gave India its 12th gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. It is also only India's second gold medal in women's boxing in the history of the Asian Games.
Earlier, veteran boxer Mary Kom won boxing gold for the country at the 2014 Asian Games. Twelve years later, Lovlina has repeated that historic achievement and written her name in golden letters in the history of Indian boxing. It would not be wrong to say that on her birthday, Lovlina has given the country a return gift.
