As financial planning widens, more Indians compare insurance with other products, though its purpose, returns, liquidity and risk differ from those of other investments.

The way Indians plan their finances has changed over the past few years. Besides saving for emergencies and retirement, many people now also consider products that can meet more than one long-term goal. Awareness has grown of insurance products that combine protection and savings. Financial needs have changed, people are more alert and information is easy to find, and this is affecting how these products are compared. However, insurance and investment serve different purposes, so it is important to understand the features, costs and risks before deciding.

Earlier, many families planning their finances looked mainly at bank deposits, gold and traditional savings routes. Now more products are available. When making long-term plans, various mutual funds, market-linked products, pension products and insurance plans are considered.

This does not mean every product is meant for every investor. The choice generally depends on the investor's income, age, financial goals, willingness to take risk and the time available for investing. People have also become more aware of how important it is to protect themselves financially while pursuing their goals.

Life insurance has traditionally been seen mainly as a means of safeguarding the family's financial interests after the policyholder's death. The nominee can receive the death benefit that applies, which can help with household expenses, loan repayment or other responsibilities.

Over time, insurers have introduced products other than pure protection. Some policies have a savings component, some offer market-linked benefits and some have income-linked features. Insurance was once not expected to figure in discussions of savings and investment, but it now does.

Why do people look at insurance alongside other products? Because they want to plan for several financial goals through a single plan. Depending on the product, an insurance policy can include financial protection and accumulated money or long-term wealth creation. For example, a person with a fixed long-term goal who wants to pay regular premiums can choose a savings policy. A person who can accept market fluctuations and can understand the related charges and risks can choose a market-linked insurance product.

Insurance is not a substitute for mutual funds, fixed deposits, shares or other financial products. Each has a different purpose, a different return, and different liquidity and risk. Comparing them helps decide how much of one's financial resources should go into which category.

There are several reasons behind this change. First, financial awareness has grown, and information on the features of different products is easily available. Second, financial goals have changed. Long-term goals such as children's education, retirement and wealth creation require planned financial commitments. Third, there is a variety of products, as insurers combine protection, savings and market-linked features in different ways. Fourth, digital facilities: online platforms have made it easier to study products, compare features and understand policy details. Fifth, some people prefer products that instil the discipline of long-term saving.

Before viewing insurance as one of the main investment options, it is necessary to understand what the policy is designed for. The death benefit, maturity benefit, premium payment term and policy term should be checked first.

Cost is also an important point. Depending on the product, a policy may carry charges for policy administration, fund management or other services. Market-linked products can be affected by changes in the value of the underlying investment.

Liquidity should also be considered. Some long-term insurance policies do not offer the flexibility of products that can be bought or sold easily. Before taking a policy, the exclusions, surrender terms and other conditions should therefore be checked.

No single financial product suits everyone. A person whose main aim is to protect the family's assets may need a different fund from one whose long-term goal is to save or invest in the market. One should first set one's financial goals and work out how much cover is needed. After that, insurance can be compared with other products on the basis of risk, expected return, liquidity and investment period.

As Indian consumers grow more aware of insurance products that deliver protection and long-term financial goals, insurance is now becoming part of broader financial planning. Some policies offer savings or market-linked options, which are useful for some financial plans. Even so, insurance does not automatically replace other investment products. Tata AIA has insurance products to suit everyone's needs and financial goals, and they can be considered according to protection needs and long-term planning needs.
