In Hindu tradition, Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha every month. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva during Pradosh Kaal brings devotees his blessings. The vrat takes its name from the day of the week on which it falls. This year, the second and last Pradosh Vrat of the Bhadrapada month will be observed as Guru Pradosh Vrat, since it falls on a Thursday.

According to the Panchang, the Trayodashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month will begin at 10:50 pm on September 23 and end at 11:18 pm on September 24. Worshipping Lord Shiva during Pradosh Kaal is considered the most important part of the observance. Based on the Udaya Tithi, the Pradosh Vrat will be observed on Thursday, September 24. Since it falls on a Thursday, it will be called Guru Pradosh Vrat.

Whenever Pradosh Vrat falls on a Thursday, it is called Guru Pradosh. Thursday is considered to be associated with Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, while Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Because of this, the day emphasises both the worship of Shiva and religious beliefs connected to the guru tattva.

On September 24, Pradosh Kaal will fall in the evening, and worshipping Lord Shiva during this time is considered auspicious. As part of the puja, the Shivling is bathed with water and milk. Bel leaves, flowers, unbroken rice and fruits are then offered to Lord Shiva. This is followed by lighting incense and a lamp and performing Shiva aarti. At the end of the puja, prayers are offered to Lord Shiva for the happiness, peace and prosperity of the family.

Ravi Yoga and Dhriti Yoga are also forming on the day of Guru Pradosh Vrat, both considered auspicious from a religious and astrological point of view. According to the Panchang, Ravi Yoga will begin at 10:35 am on September 24 and last until 6:11 am on September 25. It is believed that Ravi Yoga helps in completing tasks and removing obstacles. Dhriti Yoga will last from the morning of September 24 until 3:55 pm. According to astrology, Dhriti Yoga is also considered auspicious for stability and success in work.
