India's 17-year-old archer Kumkum Mohod won the women's individual recurve gold at the Asian Games 2026, beating a South Korean opponent in the final. She became the first Indian woman to win a medal in the recurve category.
The gold medal match between Kumkum and Oh Yejin went the full five sets. The scores finished level and the contest was decided in a shoot-off, staying open until the last arrow.

Kumkum then won the third set 30-29 to level the match at 3-3. She fell behind again in the fourth set, and the South Korean moved ahead 5-3. The fifth set was a do-or-die one for Kumkum.
In the fifth set, Kumkum shot an accurate 10, while the South Korean scored 9. The match finished level at 5-5 and a shoot-off was needed.
In the shoot-off, Kumkum scored 10 while the South Korean managed only 8. Kumkum thus won the gold and made history.
The win ended India's 48-year wait, since 1978, for a first medal in the women's individual recurve category. Kumkum has also secured her place in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
This is Kumkum's second gold at the Asian Games 2026. She had earlier won gold in the women's recurve team event with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma. On October 2, she won silver in the mixed recurve event with Dhiraj Bommadevara. India's archers have performed outstandingly in archery this time.
