Sanitation workers of the Korpana Nagar Panchayat ended the sit-in agitation they began on October 2 over their demands on October 4. The nagar panchayat administration gave the workers a written assurance on their demands, after which they called off the agitation. The assurance was given in the presence of MLA Devrao Bhongle.

The workers had been agitating for their rights for some days and had placed several demands before the administration. These included minimum wages, full wages paid on time, PF contributions, safety equipment and removal of discrepancies in pay. They also demanded that no worker face action for taking part in the agitation.

According to the written assurance given by the chief officer of the nagar panchayat, the workers' wages will be deposited through a nationalised bank. Workers will be paid according to the minimum wage. All necessary safety equipment will be provided as soon as possible.

The assurance also states that no sanitation worker's job will be affected for joining the agitation. Workers' PF contributions will be paid every month. Action will be taken to pay the wage discrepancies and any outstanding amounts at the earliest. Taking note of the workers' demands, the contractor concerned will be given the necessary instructions.

The decision brings big relief to sanitation workers who had been struggling for days over wages and facilities.

During the agitation, the workers had also raised another demand. They had asked for an inquiry into alleged irregularities in garbage management, the exploitation of sanitation workers and financial irregularities, and for action against the guilty. Citizens hope the administration will take these questions seriously as well and order a transparent inquiry.

Though the agitation has been withdrawn, attention now turns to how much of the written assurance is fulfilled on the ground, and how quickly. It must not remain on paper alone. Full wages, PF contributions and the pending wage differences should reach the workers' accounts, and safety equipment should actually be handed over.

The workers say their struggle forced the administration to take a positive stance in the end. They feel it is a "victory of the struggle of solidarity".

Chief Officer Ram Rawte, Assistant Police Inspector Sandeep Jamadar, Abid Ali, Kishor Bawane, Arun Dohe and Amol Aseker were present, along with a large number of villagers.
