Work on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway has dragged on for around 18 years. The highway is now moving towards completion. With the Mangaon and Indapur bypasses in Raigad district stuck, holiday periods have repeatedly brought heavy traffic jams here. To finish this bypass, work has now been taken up to launch the girders of a flyover that passes over the Konkan Railway track.
For this work, the Konkan Railway administration will take a mega block between October 26 and November 4. The block will be in force from 4.30 am to 7.30 am on all days except Fridays and Saturdays. That means the track will be kept free for work for three hours every day.
According to sources, the mega block will have no effect on passengers' timetables. No passenger train currently runs through this stretch, so train movement has not been affected. The Konkan Railway administration has taken full precautions while taking the block.
The Mangaon-Indapur bypass in Raigad district of the Konkan, on the Mumbai-Goa highway, has hung fire for several years. In the holiday season, travellers heading towards Mumbai and vehicles coming from Mumbai towards the Konkan and Goa face severe jams in the Mangaon-Indapur area. They are stuck for hours, with two to three hours lost in the jam alone, which makes the journey exhausting. The National Highways Authority has now stepped up work on this bypass.
Great care has been taken in taking the block on the railway track, through coordination between the National Highways Authority and the Konkan Railway administration. Launching the girders of this flyover, which is being built over the Konkan Railway track on the bypass, is considered risky and important. The contractor company concerned has begun the work in the presence of National Highways Authority engineers.
At the work site, all necessary arrangements will be in place, including a team of Konkan Railway engineers, technical department officials and staff, and highway authority engineers and staff. A joint meeting of Konkan Railway administration and National Highways Authority officials and engineers has also been held so that this risky work is completed without hindrance.
