Mumbai's suburban rail commuters can expect major relief soon. Indian Railways is developing a new automatic train protection system called Kavach 5.0. The aim is to reduce the gap between two local trains so that more trains can run on the existing lines. This could open the way to more local services during peak hours.

At present, a fixed time interval has to be maintained between two consecutive locals on Mumbai's suburban lines to keep a safe distance. This makes it difficult to use the existing infrastructure to its full capacity in the morning and evening rush.

Kavach 5.0 aims to reduce the safe distance between two trains and the time needed to maintain it. As a result, more locals could run on the lines that exist today. Based on internal documents, the plan is to begin implementing Kavach 5.0 in the Mumbai division of Central Railway by December 2026. However, how many additional services are actually added will depend on the signalling system, available rakes, infrastructure and the final operational timetable.

Under the system, the driver will continue to receive information on the next signal, the distance to it and other essential details. If a train exceeds the permitted speed, the system can apply the brakes automatically. It is also said to be capable of preventing possible head-on and side-on collisions. Kavach 5.0 could make room for about 30 per cent more services in the existing timetable.

With a shorter gap between locals, waiting time on platforms could fall, and trains are likely to be more frequent in peak hours. Better use of the existing railway network could also raise passenger-carrying capacity. According to the railways, Kavach 5.0 is being developed specifically for suburban services. It has been designed for local services that run at short intervals, stop frequently and see large numbers of passengers boarding and alighting.

Kavach's journey began in 2016. In July 2020 it was adopted as India's indigenous automatic train protection system. Kavach 4.0 received final approval in 2024. Kavach 5.0 was announced for suburban services in April 2025. Preparations are now under way to implement it on Mumbai's local train services.
