Justice Vikram Nath to be next CJI, first judge to launch live-streaming
Supreme Court judge Vikram Nath, who as Gujarat High Court chief justice began live-streaming court proceedings, is set to become India's next Chief Justice.
Supreme Court judge Vikram Nath is set to become India's next Chief Justice. He was born on 24 September 1962. He enrolled with the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council on 30 March 1987 and practised at the Allahabad High Court for more than seventeen years.
He was made an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on 24 September 2004, and took oath as a permanent judge on 27 February 2006. After serving fifteen years at the Allahabad High Court, he was made Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on 10 September 2019.
As Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Nath began live-streaming of court proceedings, becoming the first chief justice of any high court in India to do so. The move was a significant step toward using technology to increase transparency and make court proceedings more accessible to the public.
He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 31 August 2021. Justice Nath has also held key positions in the administration of justice and the legal services system. He served as chairman of the Supreme Court's Legal Services Committee, and since May 2025 he has been chairman of the Supreme Court's e-Committee, where he oversees the use of information and communication technology in the Indian judiciary.
On 24 November 2025, Justice Nath took charge as Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. He is also chairman of the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee, which works to develop and strengthen mediation as a means of dispute resolution across the country. In these roles, he has been involved in work related to free legal aid, legal awareness, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods aimed at delivering justice to weaker and disadvantaged sections of society.
