Jalgaon police book Akola man for rape on woman's complaint over false promise of marriage
A woman from Jalgaon city says a man she met on Instagram repeatedly abused her on the promise of marriage and later refused to marry her.
Jalgaon city police have registered a case of rape against a young man from Akola district on the complaint of a young woman from the city. The woman alleges she was repeatedly abused on the promise of marriage, and that matters took a turn for the worse when he later refused to marry her.
According to the complaint filed with the police, the woman came to know Akash Chavan, a resident of Borgaon Manju in Akola district, through Instagram. The two chatted regularly on social media. After some time they became friends, and the complaint states that the acquaintance later turned into a romantic relationship.
It is alleged that Chavan then proposed marriage to the woman. Given the promise of marriage, she accepted his proposal.
The complaint states that after promising marriage, the suspect began meeting the woman more often. She alleges that during this period she was physically abused repeatedly on the lure of marriage. The complaint also says the two were in a relationship for some time.
After a while, the woman asked Chavan plainly about marriage. He allegedly refused to marry her. When she felt she had been cheated through the promise of marriage, she approached the police.
The woman went to Jalgaon city police station and filed a detailed complaint. On the basis of her statement, police registered a case of rape against Chavan.
Police are taking further legal action and a thorough investigation is under way. To examine the allegations in the complaint, they are gathering information on the people and places concerned and other available evidence.
Police are also checking whether the suspect had earlier contacted other young women in a similar way and lured them with promises of marriage. They are also looking into the background of the acquaintance made on social media and how long the accused and the complainant were in touch.
