Influencer's cash-flaunting reel leads thieves to her home, Rs 1 crore stolen
A Kanyakumari influencer who flaunted cash and jewellery in viral reels had jewellery and cash worth nearly Rs 1 crore stolen from her home.
Flaunting money and jewellery on social media has proved costly for a woman influencer. Madhumita, from Kanyakumari, regularly posts reels showing off her jewellery, house and money. A few days ago she posted a video in which she was seen with bundles of 500 rupee notes and heaps of jewellery, and even showered currency notes over her daughter. The video went viral and reached lakhs of people.
The same video appears to have caught the attention of thieves, and that is where the trouble began. Madhumita and her husband had stepped out one day to go shopping when thieves broke into their house. They made off with gold jewellery, diamond necklaces and about 50,000 rupees in cash. The total value of the stolen items is said to be close to one crore rupees.
Madhumita was left shocked when she returned home and discovered the theft. She immediately filed a police complaint, after which police began their investigation. Five separate teams have been formed to track down the thieves. However, it remains unclear how the thieves got in despite CCTV cameras at the house, and how they had such detailed knowledge of the home's layout. Even after forming five teams, police are yet to get any lead on the thieves, and the direction the investigation will take remains to be seen.
Police suspect the thieves studied Madhumita's earlier reels before carrying out the theft. Many of her previous videos clearly showed the interior of her house, including where valuables were kept, the exact location of the locker and where jewellery was stored. In one reel, she had even spoken about how to take care of jewellery. In effect, the layout of her home, where items were stored and details of her security had all been unknowingly revealed by her on social media. Police believe the thieves carried out a recce based on this before committing the theft. The investigation is ongoing.
Shaken by the incident, Madhumita has shut down all her social media accounts. The woman who once flaunted her wealth before lakhs of followers has now withdrawn completely from social media. The incident has once again shown how risky it can be to publicly display wealth and money on social media.
