The Maharashtra government has officially declared 265 of the state's 358 talukas drought-affected. Rainfall this year has been 17 percent below average across the state, and public and farmer attention has now turned to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for its outlook.

IMD's Mumbai regional centre has issued a five-day forecast for September 27 to October 1, 2026. The department said the weakening of a low-pressure area has reduced the intensity of heavy rain, but thunderstorms with strong winds and showers will continue in several districts.

Mumbai is expected to see mainly light rain over the next five days. Light rain with thunder is likely on September 28, while only light showers are expected from September 29 to October 1. In the coastal Konkan districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, light to moderate rain is expected over the next five days, with lightning and showers in some places. Raigad and Ratnagiri districts have a high chance of rain on all five days.

Weather is likely to be more active in western Maharashtra and the ghat areas. IMD has warned of thunderstorms and winds of 30 to 40 kmph in the ghat areas of Pune, Nashik, Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli. Wind speeds in the Pune and Satara ghats could reach 40 to 50 kmph. According to IMD's warning chart, a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for September 28 and 29 for the Pune ghats, Satara ghats, Sangli, Kolhapur, Beed and Dharashiv.

The drought-hit districts of Marathwada will see mixed weather. Beed, Dharashiv, Latur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar may get light to moderate rain with thunder, with strong winds expected in some parts of Beed and Dharashiv. However, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli will remain mostly dry, with no specific warning issued for them. In Vidarbha, rainfall activity has dropped sharply after the low-pressure effect ended. Most Vidarbha districts, including Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Wardha, have no weather warning for the next five days. Maximum temperatures in Vidarbha could rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius after 48 hours.

Weather experts say the southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from Maharashtra between October 5 and October 10. Minimum temperatures across the state are not expected to change significantly over the next 45 days, while maximum temperatures could rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius after 24 hours.
