Hampi travel guide: Virupaksha Temple, Lotus Mahal and how to reach the Karnataka heritage site
Hampi, once the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, offers temples, ruins and hills on the banks of the Tungabhadra, and can be reached by air, rail and road.
For those interested in history and old places, Hampi in Karnataka can be a good destination. Visitors can see ancient ruins, temples and scenic hills. Set on the banks of the Tungabhadra river, Hampi was once the capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Grand buildings, markets, royal palaces, old temples and ruins carved in stone can still be seen here.
The first sight worth seeing in Hampi is the Virupaksha Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is counted among the notable temples of the town, and worship is still conducted here regularly. Its tall gopuram can be seen from afar, and the temple stands near Hampi Bazaar.
The second stop is the Vijaya Vitthala Temple and the Stone Chariot. The temple is counted among the most beautiful and historic in Hampi, with pillars bearing exquisite carvings. Its main attraction is the stone chariot carved from granite, dedicated to Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. There are also sculptures of elephants near the chariot. The temple can also be seen on the Rs 50 note.
Lotus Mahal can also be visited. The palace is in the Royal Centre and is designed to resemble a lotus, which gave it its name. Its balconies, arches and overall structure set it apart from the temples.
Do not miss Hampi Bazaar. It has been operating since the Vijayanagara era, when it was known as a major trading centre. Ancient stone mandapas can still be seen along the bazaar street. Diamonds, pearls, horses and spices were traded here at the time.
As for reaching Hampi, the nearest airport is Vijayanagara Airport, 40 km away. Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport is another option.
For rail travellers, Hosapete Junction is the nearest railway station, about 13 km from Hampi. Visitors can take a cab or a bus from the station to Hampi.
Those driving can begin the journey on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, then travel via Satara, Belagavi and Lakkampur to Hospet, and on to Hampi. Direct private buses are also available from Mumbai to Hospet.
