India comfortably chased down a target of 406 in the second ODI against West Indies. Playing in Guwahati, India lost only 2 wickets and reached the target in the 44th over, winning by 8 wickets with 39 balls to spare. The win gives India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Batting first, West Indies scored 405 for 7 in 50 overs, their highest ever total in ODI cricket. John Campbell, captain Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo scored centuries for the visitors and dominated the Indian bowlers.

Keacy Carty was out for 9. Campbell and Hope then added 115 for the second wicket. Campbell made 101 off 68 balls with 9 fours and 5 sixes. Hope and Jangoo also made fine centuries and took the score past 400. After the three centuries, India faced a target of 406.

India never looked under pressure in the chase. Captain Shubman Gill and opener Rohit Sharma thrashed the West Indies bowlers, sharing a record opening partnership of 255 in 150 balls. Rohit made 101 off 75 balls, with 10 fours and 6 sixes.

After Rohit's dismissal, Gill carried the innings on his own. He completed his double century in just 117 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history. Gill remained not out on 223 off 132 balls, with 28 fours and 6 sixes.

Virat Kohli contributed 29 off 19 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad sealed the win with an unbeaten 31 off 37 balls. India reached 300 in just 29.1 overs, the fastest 300 by any team in ODI cricket.

This is only the second successful chase of more than 400 in ODIs. South Africa earlier chased down 435. India's previous highest successful chase was 360 against Australia in 2013, a record that has now been broken.

Gill added several other records. His 223 is the third-highest individual score by any batter in ODIs, behind Rohit's 264 and Guptill's 237. It is the highest score in a run chase. It is also the highest ODI score by a captain, surpassing the 219 by Virender Sehwag. Gill is now the second Indian after Rohit Sharma to score more than one ODI double century.
