Gulveer Singh wins 5000m bronze for third medal of the Asian Games in Japan
Gulveer Singh added 5000m bronze to two silvers, becoming only the second Indian athlete after PT Usha to win three or more individual medals.
India's star distance runner Gulveer Singh has made history at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, where Indian athletes have performed impressively. In the men's 5000m final held today, he finished third and won the bronze medal. It is his third medal of these Games.
Gulveer held his pace to the end of the final and reached the bronze on the strength of it. He had already won two medals at the Games.
His first medal came in the men's 1500m final, where he won silver with a time of 3 minutes 31.13 seconds. The second came in the 10000m, where he clocked 28 minutes 29.38 seconds and took silver. Today's third place in the 5000m added a bronze to his tally.
Gulveer Singh is now only the second Indian athlete after PT Usha to win three or more individual medals for India.
The great runner PT Usha won four gold medals and one silver, five medals in all, at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. No Indian athlete had matched that feat in the 38 years since. Gulveer Singh has now done so, and his triple success at the Games in Japan is a major achievement for India.
