Demand for food items rises during the festive season. To curb the sale of adulterated and non-compliant food, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a special drive in Nagpur. Its teams inspected several shops, warehouses and food manufacturing units in the city and surrounding areas and acted against suspect stock. Goods worth more than Rs 25 lakh were seized.

At the premises of Amsar and Company at Unjha Raipur Transport, 1,997.6 kg of star anise (chakraful) was found. Artificial colour is suspected to have been used in it. The stock, worth Rs 6,22,492, was taken into custody. At New Nagpur Cold Storage, 36 kg of raisins was seized from Samdha Corporation and Mantri Trading Pvt Ltd after irregularities were found in labelling.

From two traders at the Kalamna grain market, 10,436 kg of Sortex rice packed without following the rules was seized. The goods are said to be worth Rs 5,82,416.

At Hingna, stock of a caffeinated beverage was taken from Superior Biscuits and Products. At Jayshankar Kirana Stores in Khamla, 568 kg of suspect jaggery was seized. The two actions involved goods worth Rs 2,37,000 and Rs 2,14,080 respectively.

In Kamptee and Savner, food manufacturing without a licence and violations of labelling rules were found. Stocks of corn flour, custard powder, maize starch and rice were seized there.

In addition, 479.2 kg of suspect cream was seized from Vakilpeth. Milk, rasgulla, sugar, khoya and cow ghee were also seized from other dairy businesses. The FDA said all the samples would be tested in a laboratory and legal action would be taken against those concerned once the reports arrive.
