FDA seizes 1,900 kg of sweets worth Rs 5.7 lakh brought to Akola in unsafe manner
The Food and Drug Administration seized about 1,900 kg of mawa, khawa and halwa from two trucks and suspended the licences of three traders.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took major action in Akola on Monday. About 1,900 kg of food items, including mawa, khawa and halwa, that were being brought into the city in an unsafe manner were seized. Goods worth about Rs 5 lakh were taken into custody in the action.
Assistant Commissioner Devendra Veer had received confidential information that food items were being brought to Akola in an unsafe manner through Arco Transport in the Raily Jin area. Acting on the tip, officials inspected Arco Transport at Raily Jin, Akola, at 11.30 am on Monday.
The inspection found that a stock of sweets of different brands had been brought from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in two trucks, bearing registration numbers MP-09/HQ-5004 and MH-28/AB-7882. The goods included Sweet Halwa (Ambika), Traditional Sweet (GWAL), Halwa (Shri GWAL), Rich Sweet (Ambika), Brajnidhi Sweet and Muralidhar Sweet.
Officials took routine samples of the food items. The remaining stock of about 1,900 kg, valued at Rs 5.72 lakh, was seized. It will be destroyed at the Akola Municipal Corporation's biogas project at Bhod.
The licences of the traders who ordered the goods, Kamal Sharma, Vaibhav Patil and Ashok Ahuja, have been suspended.
The action was carried out under the guidance of Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe and Amravati Joint Commissioner Sachin Kedare. It was executed by Akola Assistant Commissioner Devanand Veer and Food Safety Officer Kishor Borchate.
In Beed, too, the FDA acted against those selling banned food items and those flouting hygiene and safety rules at places that make and sell food and drink. On the directions of Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, action was taken at two places in Beed city on September 24, and banned gutkha and paan masala were seized.
Cases have been registered against the vendors concerned at the city police station. In addition, serious deficiencies were found at a tea and snack centre on Jalna Road, and its licence has been suspended.
