A farmer died of an electric shock in Mul in Chandrapur district. The deceased has been identified as Prakash Kotrange, who had gone to water his field in the morning. He is survived by his wife, Madhuri, and a sister. A pall of gloom has settled over the village, and people in the area have expressed deep grief.

Farmers are working hard these days to save the paddy crop from being lost to drought. Kotrange had gone to the field in the morning, as he did every day, in an effort to save at least part of the crop.

According to the information available, Kotrange had not returned home even by afternoon. Worried, his wife, Madhuri Kotrange, went to the field to look for him. She found him lying lifeless. Seeing no movement, she raised an alarm and called farmers in the neighbouring fields for help. They rushed to the spot on hearing her cries.

Preliminary information suggests that Kotrange received a severe shock from a live wire, either lying loose or broken, in the field, and died on the spot.

Officials and staff of Mahavitaran and a team from Mul police station reached the spot soon after being informed. Police have drawn up a panchnama of the scene. The actual cause of death will be clear only after an official medical examination and the post-mortem report. Mul police are investigating the case further.

Farmers are working day and night amid the drought, regardless of the risk to their lives. The safety of farm pumps, exposed electric wires and power connections in fields has become a very serious question. Farmers in the area have strongly demanded that Mahavitaran and the departments concerned immediately inspect all electric wires in the fields and put necessary safety measures in place, so that such tragedies do not recur. The accident has plunged the Kotrange family into grief.
