The Democratic Party has won control of both chambers of Congress, handing a setback to President Donald Trump's Republicans, while the Michigan Senate race is still undecided.
The results of the US midterm elections have caused a major stir in American politics. Voters have dealt a blow to the Republican Party, which contested the election under the leadership of President Donald Trump. The Democratic Party has gained control of both chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Democratic candidates have won even in traditional Republican strongholds, and new power equations are beginning to take shape in American politics.
Voting took place on November 3, 2026. Ballots were cast for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, and the posts of governor in 36 states. According to the results, Republican dominance of the Senate has ended and the Democrats have crossed the majority mark. In the House too, the Democratic Party has gone past the required 218 seats. This means the opposition's challenge will grow over the remaining two years of Trump's term.
The Democratic Party has made significant gains in states such as Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio and Kansas. In Kansas, the Democratic Party defeated the Republican candidate. Texas and South Carolina are traditionally regarded as states of Republican influence, so questions have begun to be raised about Trump's popularity after the shift there.
All eyes are on the Senate seat in Michigan, where Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers are locked in a close contest. If El-Sayed wins, he will be the first Muslim senator in the United States. He campaigned with an emphasis on healthcare, issues affecting ordinary people and economic policy. However, going by the current results, his victory has not yet been officially confirmed, and the final result is awaited.
Trump gave his first reaction after the defeat. He congratulated the Democratic Party and said he was ready to work with the opposition for the good of the country. At the same time, he refused to take the blame for the loss. According to Trump, he was not a candidate himself, so there was little he could have done about the outcome. He also claimed that had he contested the election himself, the Republican Party would have won.
Trump said he knew many Democratic leaders and was confident that problems could be solved together. But he also warned that if the opposition did not cooperate, he would use his veto power. On his Truth Social account he also posted a photograph of a red cap in the Make America Great Again style, with the word "Veto" written on it. Through this he sent a clear message that if the opposition opposed his stand, its proposals would not be approved.
With the Democratic Party dominant in both chambers, many decisions of the Trump administration may face opposition. The opposition will now have an important role in approving presidential appointments, passing new bills and scrutinising government policies.
