Tension between police and protesters has come into focus again during a demonstration by the Congress and other Opposition parties in Delhi. Delhi Police constable Ankit Kasana, who was on duty, has alleged that he was assaulted during the protest. According to him, a large crowd of protesters surrounded him, misbehaved with him and beat him. He has been medically examined, and Delhi Police are going through videos of the incident.

The protest is being held by Congress and INDIA bloc leaders against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A large crowd had gathered in the Jantar Mantar area on Wednesday. At that time, police were detaining some protesters and the situation became tense.

Kasana alleges that in the confusion, the crowd surrounded him. He says some people in the crowd misbehaved with him and attacked him. He also said his uniform was damaged, and alleges that it was torn.

Describing his ordeal, Kasana said many people had surrounded him and that there were women in the crowd. He said everything happened suddenly, so he would not now be able to recognise the faces or names of those people.

Kasana said the crowd pulled him from behind and attacked him. He alleges that he pleaded to be let go, but no one in the crowd released him. When the situation worsened, his colleagues stepped in and pulled him out of the crowd. According to Kasana, three to four policemen got him out, and that is why his life was saved. He said the crowd included men, women and some elderly people.

Meanwhile, some videos of the incident have surfaced. Delhi Police are examining videos recorded on mobile phones. Efforts are under way to identify those who allegedly attacked the policeman.

Police are reportedly preparing to register an FIR in the matter. Action is likely under sections relating to obstructing a public servant in the discharge of duty, assault and other related offences.
