A dead rat found inside a Mysore masala dosa at the well-known Radhakrishna Hotel in Borivali (West), Mumbai, has caused an uproar. After the incident raised questions about food safety and hygiene at the eatery, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe took a firm stand and suspended its licence with immediate effect.

According to the information available, Amit Trivedi had gone to the Borivali eatery with his two brothers and his son to eat South Indian food. He ordered a Mysore masala dosa. After a few bites, he saw a small dead rat in it. It is said that the dead rat had come into the customer's mouth, after which he began vomiting on the spot.

Trivedi made a video and photographs of the lapse and posted them on social media, where they went viral. He also filed a complaint with the Borivali police.

Pushpalata Mandale, senior police inspector at Borivali police station, said the police forwarded the complaint to the FDA immediately.

Once the matter came to light, a team of food safety officers raided the eatery on the direct orders of Mundhe, a senior IAS officer and the FDA commissioner. The inspection found the eatery's kitchen extremely dirty and a serious violation of food safety standards (FSSAI). On the charge of endangering public health, the FDA stopped the eatery's operations and suspended its licence.

The administration has said the eatery will not be allowed to reopen until its kitchen is thoroughly cleaned and all standards are followed.

Mundhe said no hotel or restaurant that endangers public health would be spared. He said that after the Borivali incident, checks on kitchen hygiene at other hotels and eateries in Mumbai have been tightened.
