A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and a new cyclonic storm is forming. It could affect more than 10 states. Warnings of heavy rain and strong winds have been issued for several parts of south, east and central India.
The system over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a cyclone between October 25 and 26. The storm is expected to move towards the coast of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. Between October 27 and 29, very heavy rain is possible in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana, with winds blowing at 50 to 70 km per hour. According to weather experts, the likely cyclone could be named 'Arnav'.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in its warning that a cyclonic storm is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal by October 26 and intensify further. Under its influence, extremely heavy rain is possible at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh on October 27 and 28, and in Odisha and Telangana on October 28. Heavy to very heavy rain is also likely at isolated places in Odisha on October 27 and 29, 2026. The department has asked people to stay alert and keep track of official weather information.
Meanwhile, under the influence of another low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep, post-monsoon rain will continue in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry until October 30, with heavy rain and lightning.
Maharashtra will also feel the effect of this change. Because of the Bay of Bengal system, cloudy skies and rain are forecast in Vidarbha and Marathwada. The forecast is for the period from the 27th to the 2nd of next month. The rain may bring some relief to those sowing rabi crops, but farmers have been urged to stay cautious given the changing weather.
In east and northeast India, heavy rain is possible in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal between October 28 and 30. Jharkhand may see rain with strong thunderstorms. Heavy rain is also forecast in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur.
In central and north India, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha may get heavy rain on October 28 and 29, with winds blowing at 40 to 60 km per hour. A warning of widespread rain has been issued for eastern Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh between October 29 and 30. Rain is also likely in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.
According to the weather department's forecast, the effect of these two systems could keep the weather unsettled in many parts of the country for the next few days. People have been urged to take precautions.
