Nagpur: Cyber fraudsters duped a senior scientist of Rs 2.87 crore by luring him with the promise of huge profits in the share market. The 40-year-old complainant is a senior scientist at the Central Institute for Cotton Research.

The fraudsters contacted the scientist on Instagram and lured him with promises of high returns from share trading. He was then added to a Telegram channel. They sent him a link and asked him to invest through online stock trading. Assuring him of profits, they got him to invest Rs 2.87 crore in installments at different times.

When the scientist tried to withdraw the money, the accused asked him to deposit additional amounts in the name of paying tax. Even after depositing this amount, he was unable to withdraw his investment, following which he realised he had been cheated.

The scientist filed a complaint at the cyber police station. Police have registered a case under fraud provisions and the IT Act. Highly educated citizens are increasingly falling victim to cyber fraud.
