A construction contractor was killed on Wednesday morning, 23 September, in front of a Naag temple in Bhadravati, Chandrapur district, after his throat was slit with a sharp weapon. The deceased was identified as Umdev Bhavrao Meshram, 40, originally from Deurwada but currently living near Pragya Library, close to the Panchayat Samiti in Bhadravati. Police arrested two accused within a few hours of the incident.

The two arrested accused are real brothers, 20-year-old Shreyash Pulli and 25-year-old Vaibhav Pulli. Shreyash worked as a labourer for Umdev. The investigation found that Umdev was not paying wages on time, leaving Shreyash facing repeated financial trouble. Even after the work was completed, his requests for payment were brushed aside, and this fuelled growing anger in Shreyash against Umdev.

On Wednesday morning, Umdev was returning on his two-wheeler, registration number MH 34 Q 2513, after buying kharra from a paan stall. Shreyash and Vaibhav blocked his path in front of the Naag temple and began questioning him about the money. Not satisfied with his answer, the two attacked him repeatedly with a sharp weapon on his neck and throat. Umdev died on the spot. The attack took place on a busy road in a crowded market area, witnessed by people nearby. After the attack, both accused fled the scene.

Local residents alerted the police as soon as they learnt of the incident. Bhadravati police reached the spot and began investigating. Police deployed their crime detection team to trace the accused, and within a few hours the team succeeded in apprehending Shreyash Pulli and Vaibhav Pulli. The police investigation found that anger over repeated non-payment of wages was the reason behind the killing.
