CJP threatens jail-filling stir in Mumbai on Oct 2 if poll body chief does not quit
The Cockroach Janata Party has announced a jail-filling agitation at Shivaji Park on October 2 demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
The controversy over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has now reached Mumbai. The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has announced an agitation demanding his resignation. The party has said clearly that if Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, it will launch an agitation in Mumbai from October 2.
The CJP had sought permission from Mumbai Police for its agitation, but police refused to grant it. Despite the refusal, party leader Abhijeet Deepke did not back down. He announced a "jail bharo" (fill the jails) agitation in a post on X.
In his post, Deepke wrote, "Gyanu, must go..." He added that the jail bharo agitation would be held at Shivaji Park at 4 pm on October 2. Deepke also used the hashtag Save Democracy in the post. The two-line post has raised concern for both Gyanesh Kumar and Mumbai Police, since the party is going ahead with the agitation despite being denied permission.
Deepke's announcement could add to Gyanesh Kumar's troubles. Political circles are now watching whether the Chief Election Commissioner resigns before October 2. The CJP's move is expected to further heat up Mumbai's political climate, and is seen as likely to increase pressure on the central government and the Election Commission as well.
Meanwhile, the Thackeray brothers have also announced a mega march in Mumbai. Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray have decided to hold the march in Mumbai on October 4. Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar is reported to be joining the march. Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray have also appealed to leaders of other parties to join. Raj Thackeray is expected to soon announce the route, destination and timing of the march.
With the CJP's jail bharo agitation on one side and the Thackeray brothers' mega march preparations on the other, political activity in Mumbai has picked up pace. All eyes are on how these two agitations are met and what political developments follow in the coming days.
