Chandigarh: Son held for shooting head constable father over marriage row
An 18-year-old allegedly shot his police head constable father dead and attacked his mother after being told to wait to marry his girlfriend.
A shocking case has emerged from Chandigarh, where an 18-year-old boy, adamant about marrying his girlfriend, has been accused of shooting his own father dead. The father was a head constable in the police. Police say the accused then also attacked his mother and tried to kill her.
Police have taken the accused boy into custody and seized a country-made pistol from the scene. The head constable who died has been identified as Nitin Singh, 45, who worked in the accounts department of Chandigarh Police headquarters. His body was found at his government quarters in Sector 22.
According to police, the accused, Arman, wanted to marry his girlfriend as soon as possible and had been pressuring his family over the past few days. However, since he was only 18, his parents had asked him to wait until he reached the legal age. On Thursday evening, another quarrel broke out at home over the marriage issue. The investigation found that the accused had demanded 10 lakh rupees from his father for the wedding. When the argument escalated, he allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol kept at home and shot his father.
Police say that after attacking his father, the accused also tried to attack his mother. She broke free from his grip and fled to the roof of the house, raising an alarm to alert the neighbours. Police claim the accused then tried to make it look as though an outsider had broken into the house. But after several inconsistencies were found in this account during questioning, police took Arman into custody.
During the investigation, details of an old case against the accused also came to light. Earlier this year, he was driving a friend's Mahindra Thar in the Manimajra area when it collided with a motorcycle, killing two brothers who were riding it. Arman was arrested in that case and was out on bail at the time of the shooting. Chandigarh police are investigating the killing of the father, the attack on the mother and the earlier accident together.
