Body in sack found on Versova beach in Mumbai; murder case registered against unknown accused
A man's bloated body tied in a sack washed up at Versova beach in Andheri West on Thursday, and police have booked an unknown accused for murder.
The body of a man, tied up in a sack, was found on Versova beach in Andheri West, a Mumbai suburb, on Thursday morning. The discovery caused alarm in the area. The body was reportedly found behind the Hindu crematorium at Devachi Wadi on JP Road.
The dead man is aged around 35 to 40, and the body was bloated. People who had come for a walk on the beach noticed that something tied up in a sack had washed ashore. They immediately informed the police.
Police reached the spot and cut open the sack with a blade, and a man's body came out. The body was then sent to Cooper Hospital, where doctors examined it and declared the man dead. The body remains at the hospital for postmortem.
Police initially suspect that an unknown person was killed and the body was tied in a sack and thrown into the sea to destroy evidence. This is the police's preliminary suspicion.
A case of murder has been registered against an unknown accused at Versova police station under Sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. No arrest has been reported so far, as the accused has not been identified.
Versova police are trying to trace the accused using CCTV footage from the area and tip-offs. The first challenge before the police is to establish the dead man's identity. The investigation is expected to pick up pace only after he is identified.
Separately, a tragic incident was also reported from Raigad on Thursday. Eight members of a group of tourists from Pune drowned. Preliminary information is that the eight misjudged the water. The group was on a trip from Alandi in Pune, organised for a private class. The bodies of all eight who drowned have been recovered.
