Billy Root, the younger brother of England's former captain and star batter Joe Root, has announced his retirement from all formats of professional cricket at the age of 34. After a long and successful 14-year career, Billy Root has decided to bid farewell to the cricket field. He said clearly that now is the right time to move towards the next phase of life. He shared the news himself in a post on social media.
Billy Root, 34, is known as a fine left-handed batter and a useful spin bowler. Over his 14-year county career, he has played for major teams including Glamorgan, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. In county cricket, he played several important innings on multiple occasions that helped his team to victory. Glamorgan also shared the news of Billy Root's retirement on its official social media account. According to the club's post, Billy Root spent seven years at the Sophia Gardens ground, scoring around 5,000 runs during that time and winning two One-Day Cup titles. The club said Billy Root will retire from cricket at the end of the 2026 season.
Billy Root appeared emotional while announcing his retirement. He said, "The last 14 years playing professional cricket have been an incredibly beautiful and proud journey for me. Every moment spent on the field has been special to me. But now is the right time to put the bat down and step towards a new chapter, new challenges and new goals in life."
The Root brothers' cricket journey began at England's well known Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club. As children, the two brothers learned the basics of cricket by practising together for hours on the club's ground. The 2013 Lord's Test was a deeply historic and special moment in the lives of the two brothers. At that time Joe Root was playing international cricket for England's main team, while Billy Root was part of the MCC Young Cricketers.
