Naval Arjun Sonawane died after his motorcycle fell into an unfinished drain at Mehrun; residents allege there was no warning board and want action against the contractor.
A 37-year-old man died after his motorcycle fell into an open drain in the middle of the road near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Garden in Jalgaon's Mehrun area. The deceased has been identified as Naval Arjun Sonawane.
It is alleged that the drain work was incomplete and that no warning board or other safety arrangement had been put up at the spot. The accident occurred for this reason, it is being said. Demands are now being raised for strict action against the contractor concerned.
According to preliminary information, Sonawane was returning home on his motorcycle after finishing work on his farm. Concrete drain work is under way in the Mehrun garden area. Part of the work had been left incomplete, so he did not notice the drain in the middle of the road. There was also no warning board, and he fell into the drain along with his bike.
Sonawane suffered a serious head injury in the fall. He was taken immediately to the District Government Medical College and Hospital, where medical officers examined him and declared him dead. He had died before treatment could begin.
Sonawane lived in Rameshwar Colony in Jalgaon with his wife, mother, son and daughter. The family has been plunged into grief by the sudden accident, and a mood of mourning prevails in Rameshwar Colony as well.
Several questions are being raised. Were the precautions necessary for people's safety taken while drain work was under way in the middle of the road? And why was no warning board placed at the site of the unfinished work? Citizens are demanding an inquiry into the entire matter and strict action against the contractor concerned.
