A killing caused a sensation in Bhadravati city on Tuesday morning. A 40-year-old mason who had set out for work on his motorcycle was brutally attacked near Nag Mandir Chowk, with unidentified assailants slashing his throat with a sharp weapon. The attack took place around 7:15 am, leaving the area in a state of fear. In their initial investigation, police said the killing could be linked to an old dispute over money. Police have arrested one accused, while a second accused is still absconding and being hunted.

The deceased has been identified as Umesh Bhaurao Meshram. He originally belonged to Deurwada and was currently living in the Shivajinagar area of Bhadravati, near Pragya Vachanalaya. He supported his family by working as a mason. As on any other day, he had left home for work around 7:15 am on Tuesday on his motorcycle.

According to police, when Umesh reached near Nag Mandir Chowk around 7:30 am, unidentified assailants who were lying in wait attacked him suddenly. The attackers struck him directly on the throat with a sharp weapon. The blows were so severe that Umesh collapsed on the road, drenched in blood, and died on the spot. The attack, which happened in broad daylight in a crowded area, left the entire neighbourhood shaken.

As soon as news of the incident spread, local residents immediately alerted Bhadravati police station. On receiving the information, a police team led by DYSP Sachin Khetre reached the spot. Police immediately cordoned off the area, carried out the panchnama, and sent the body to hospital for a post-mortem.

Police launched a swift investigation into the case and intensified the search for suspects. In their initial probe, police suspect the killing may have stemmed from a dispute over money transactions. Acting quickly, Bhadravati police have arrested one accused in the case, while a police team has left in search of the second accused involved in the incident.

The early morning killing has left people in Bhadravati angry, and police are now working to trace the absconding accused.
