Apple Pay launches in India with Axis Bank, works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
Apple said on Wednesday it has started Apple Pay in India with Axis Bank, with Mac support to follow soon.
US technology company Apple has entered India's payments market. The company said on Wednesday that it has launched the Apple Pay service in partnership with Axis Bank.
Apple users will be able to use the service on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Support for the Mac is coming soon.
Jennifer Bailey, Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet at Apple, said: "India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that is embracing a cashless future while also wanting the highest standards of security and privacy. We are delighted to bring Apple Pay to users in India today."
According to the company, people using Apple devices will be able to pay in stores, in apps and on the web. They will not need to enter a PIN or use an OTP at checkout.
The company's statement said: "Customers with Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank can add their cards to Apple Pay and use them at thousands of stores and online merchants across India, as well as anywhere that accepts NFC transactions." Apple Pay users can add their debit or credit card to the app to make payments.
On security, the statement said: "When customers use a card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are stored neither on the device nor on Apple's servers. Apple does not share them with merchants either. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and kept safe in the Secure Element. The Secure Element is an industry-standard certified chip built to keep payment information on the device secure."
Apple also does not keep transaction details.
If a user's iPhone is lost or stolen, they can quickly locate the device using the Find My app, lock it, or stop payments from it.
