Ahmedabad's Rs 825 crore Veer Savarkar Sports Complex ready for athletes
The world-class facility in Naranpura, inaugurated by Amit Shah, will host training for 18 sports ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, built at a cost of about Rs 825 crore in Ahmedabad's Naranpura area, has opened for athletes, offering international-standard sporting facilities. The state-of-the-art complex is expected to help Ahmedabad host major national and international competitions and will add significantly to the city's sports infrastructure, with athletes no longer needing to travel elsewhere to train.
The complex was built through a joint effort of the Gujarat government and the central government, and was inaugurated last year on 14 September by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The project aims to boost the sports sector and build world-class infrastructure, as the central and state governments work to make Ahmedabad a global sports hub through joint planning and funding.
The complex offers international-standard training facilities, a modern fitness centre and advanced medical facilities for the overall development of athletes and coaches. Accommodation has also been arranged within the complex premises for visiting athletes and coaches, so that training and lodging are both available at the same location, saving time and trouble for athletes coming from outside the city.
The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura is spread over about 1.19 lakh square metres. It has large indoor and outdoor facilities for 18 different sports, including swimming, tennis, badminton, shooting, wrestling and gymnastics.
The complex has strengthened Ahmedabad's position on the global sporting map. The city will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, an event expected to give Indian athletes an international platform in their own country and mark a historic milestone for Indian sport.
