Veteran Marathi and Hindi film actor Nana Patekar has died. According to the report, he suffered a heart attack at his home in Goa. He was rushed to hospital, but despite extensive efforts he did not regain consciousness and doctors declared him dead. His sudden death has left people stunned, and the Marathi and Hindi film industries are in mourning. He was 75.

Patekar's real name was Vishwajeet Dinkarrao Patekar, but he was known everywhere simply as Nana. Everyone has seen his powerful acting, but very few people know about his personal and family life. One such fact is that he had lived apart from his wife for about 35 years without divorcing her. He had explained the reason himself in an interview.

His wife is Neelkanti Patekar, who is also a Marathi actress, something many people do not know. Neelkanti entered films as a child artist in 1966 and won a National Award for her work. She first worked in a bank before making her place in the Marathi film industry. She was not only an actress but also worked as a writer and made a distinct name for herself. She stayed away from films for many years, but made a strong comeback in the film Chhaava.

Nana and Neelkanti first met at a theatre, where their friendship began and later turned into love. In 1978 the two decided to marry. They had two sons, Durvasa and Malhar. Durvasa was battling an illness and died at the age of one and a half to two and a half years. Malhar Patekar has worked as an assistant director on the film The Attacks of 26/11. He also owns a production house called Nanasaheb Production House.

Patekar had recently given an interview that drew wide attention, with several clips from it going viral on social media. In the conversation he explained why he lived apart from his wife. According to him, there is a great difference between his temperament and thinking and Neelkanti's, and so the two live apart by choice. He also said his wife had made a very big contribution to his journey as an actor, and that he respects her for it.
