Accidents continue on Rahud Ghat; toll manager and police inspector inspect the stretch
Residents want permanent safety measures on Rahud Ghat on the Mumbai-Agra highway after repeated accidents, and the toll manager and police inspector have inspected it.
A series of accidents continues on Rahud Ghat in Chandwad taluka on the Mumbai-Agra highway (NH-3). The ghat has steep slopes and sharp bends, so accidents occur here repeatedly, and it is now being called a "death trap".
Many people have lost their lives in accidents on the ghat. The series shows no sign of stopping and has to be stopped, and residents of the area are now expressing strong anger.
Citizens are demanding permanent safety measures to curb the accidents. Umrane Press Club and residents had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Chandwad toll administration, which also warned of a road blockade protest.
The demands include speed breakers, CCTV cameras, reflectors, direction signboards and crash barriers at various points on the ghat. Residents also want strict control over vehicles travelling through the ghat in difficult conditions, and a technical survey of the road followed by a permanent safety plan.
Following these demands, the Chandwad toll manager and Police Inspector Abhijit Sonawane inspected Rahud Ghat. The inspection looked at where the risk of accidents is highest on the ghat and which sections need vehicle speeds kept in check. It also examined how help could be provided quickly if an accident occurs.
The Chandwad toll manager said the measures that were to be taken have been taken. More signboards will be added at some places. At some places the height of the speed breakers has reduced, and this will be restored. The manager added that most accidents on Rahud Ghat involve heavy trucks, so a campaign will be run targeting them.
Police Inspector Abhijit Sonawane said discussions have been held with the tehsildar and other officials. He said the focus must be on how the number of accidents can be reduced, and that suggestions made by local residents will be considered.
